assignment 10.15

Dear Ms. Samantha M. Murray
President, Starbucks

Recently, I stopped into a local Starbucks coffee shop to observe some of the behavior; from both the customers and staff.

First, I walked in and sat down and observe some of the interactions between the people. I noticed that the customers were having discussions amongst themselves and seemed pretty happy, that is to say they weren't noticably distracted by the coffee, so the quality must be at least tolerable. From there I took a look around at the store. It appeared clean. In fact, there was a staff member cleaning the windows at the time.

Next, I ordered coffee. I was second in line, so I paid attention to the interaction in front of me. It was cordial. The staff are all Koreans. The conversation is usually a little more polite than what you might find in an American shop but also shorter because of the language barrier. When it was my turn to order I said "hello" (I know the staff because I go there everyday) and might polite conversation as well.

The local Starbucks seems to be a well run outfit. The experience was pleasant and I enjoyed relaxing there at the end of the day. The other customers seemed to as well. It was clean and there seemed to be no reason for complaint.

Sincerely,
Terence Koppen

letter of recommendation

Dear Mrs. Jonasz

I just had a job interview that went very well! They asked for a letter of recommendation and I was hoping that you could provide one. I've thought of some of the points that could be brought up in the letter.

1. I work well with other people

2. I always have a great attitude

3. I have high standards of quality for my work.

The job is for a copy editor at a local newspaper. The interviewer aked that the letter be sent directly to him. Here is the address:

John Wilkes

I would very much appreciate you assisting me with this. I would like to thank you in advance for sending the letter by 15 June.

assignment 12.1

John f. Kennedys Inaugeral speech.

In the speech, John F. Kennedy does a very good job of addressing several different audiences as well as walking a tightrope with his message.

A. The introduction seemed to meld into the body, not clearly defined. Between the body and the conclusion, however, there is a clear division.

B. The speech, overall is very organized. The Body is broken up into two parts as the president addresses each potential audience directly.

C. As far as verbal signposts, the president addresses each audience directly, not really a great transition but it works very well in the speech. Mr. Kennedy also uses the transition "finally" twice in the speech.

D. There was definately clear themes. Mr. Kennedy focused on the past of the U.S. as well as what he meant to represent to the rest of the world. he definately walked a tightrope of building confidence in the American audience's ability to defend itself without making a proclamation of war.

E. He did not really use facts or statistics but rather protrayed an idealistic and optimistic overall picture.

F. As mentioned above, the point of the speech was to build a sense of optimism.

G. It would be difficult to imagine him not being enthusiastic for becoming the president. He did say "Let us never fear to negotiate, or negotiate out of fear" which seems to say he was willing to do alot of work.

assignment 1.12

Reebok would benefit from greater diversity because they would have input from different groups of people. Instead of creating just a niche product, they can now create many products for all kinds of people to buy. put another way, their product market is bigger. Also, if one part of the market doesn't like them, they have all the other parts to sell to as well.

assignment 1.10

I would make a program or basic language and culture mandatory for all Thai employees. I would make a Thai culture and basic language program necessary for american management. This would help prevent the issues that are occuring solely because of a lack of understanding and basic communication.
